The Question Behind AI Authorship

I understand why people feel uneasy when they see AI inside a creative project. So much of what moves through the internet now feels strangely polished and strangely empty. The image is impressive, but there is no pulse behind it. The paragraph is smooth, but it does not feel lived. The style is loud, but the meaning is thin.

That is what people are reacting to when they talk about “AI slop.” They are not only rejecting a tool. They are rejecting the feeling that something human has been skipped. I share that concern.

Aurelda was not created to skip the human. It was created because the human experience behind it became too large to hold in one form.

Aurelda is a mythic and wellness ecosystem: books, breathwork, a Codex for visual worldbuilding, reflective technology, the podcast, workshops, community, and a deeper path of sacred remembrance. It is rooted in grief, queerness, exile, belonging, breath, beauty, and the long return to wholeness. AI did not invent that.

AI did not live my life. It did not grieve Mila with me. It did not walk with me through Playa del Carmen or sit with me in Cuernavaca as I revised the books. It did not carry the ache of becoming fifty, rebuilding after loss, and asking what the next chapter of my work wanted to become. That part is human.

The Difference Between Replacement and Extension

When I talk about AI authorship for creators, I am not talking about handing a machine the center of the work. I am talking about a different relationship.

AI can be used to replace presence. That is the shallow path. It can be used to produce more images, more posts, more filler, more noise. It can be used to imitate what already exists, flatten cultural material, or bypass the slow work of voice and vision. But AI can also be used as an extension.

A sketchbook is an extension. A camera is an extension. A microphone is an extension. Editing software is an extension. None of these tools automatically make the work less human. The question is whether the tool is serving the creator’s discernment or replacing it.

In Aurelda, AI is not the author. It is a reflective instrument. It helps me prototype scenes, test atmosphere, refine visual direction, explore symbolic language, and translate the emotional world of Aurelda into forms people can feel before they ever open a book, join a breathwork session, listen to a podcast, or enter the Codex. The authorship lives in the choices.

What belongs? What feels false? What has resonance? What has drifted? What must be refused? What must be protected? AI cannot answer those questions for Aurelda. I have to.

Why Aurelda Uses AI Differently

Aurelda is not a random fantasy image project. It has canon. It has characters, sacred sites, visual rules, sound direction, cultural resonance reviews, and a living body of story. There are documents that define how Lumina should appear, how the Resonance Orb should be handled, how sacred landscapes should feel, how I should be represented, and what kinds of visual drift must be avoided. That matters.

Anyone can generate a beautiful image. A beautiful image is not automatically Aurelda. An Aurelda image has to carry the right emotional tone. It has to respect the world. It has to feel aligned with the books. It has to avoid generic fantasy, glossy CGI, empty spectacle, and careless cultural mashup. It has to serve the remembering. This is where creative direction becomes more important than prompting.

A prompt asks for an output. Creative direction protects a world.

When I use AI in Aurelda, I am not asking it to invent meaning for me. I am asking it to help translate meaning that already exists: in the manuscripts, in the breathwork, in the symbols, in the grief, in the lived experience, in the long listening that shaped this work before the tools arrived. That is a sacred difference.

AI Is Not the Author. The Human Is.

The current legal and ethical conversation around AI keeps returning to the same center: human authorship matters. The U.S. Copyright Office has said that using AI as an assistive tool does not remove copyright protection from a larger human-authored work, but material generated wholly by AI is not treated the same way as human authorship. It has also said that human authors can claim their own contributions, including human-authored expression, creative selection, arrangement, and modification of AI-generated material. That distinction feels right to me. 1

The human author is not just the person who presses “generate.” The human author is the one who carries the wound, the vision, the worldview, the memory, the refusal, the revision, and the responsibility. That is why I do not believe the most important question is, “Was AI used?”

The better question is: Was the human still present? In Aurelda, the answer is yes.

The work begins in human experience. The tools come later. AI may help me see a possible image, but I decide whether it belongs. It may help me explore visual language, but I decide whether the language is true. It may help me prototype a scene, but I decide whether the scene carries the pulse of Aurelda. The machine does not keep the canon. I do.
