The Riviera Maya is more than just a destination. For me, it is a place where the earth hums with history, the air whispers ancient secrets, and every step feels like a reconnection to something timeless. Eight years ago, I arrived here on a whim, but what I found was a home, a deep and inexplicable bond to this land that shaped my journey and inspired my work.
A Serendipitous Beginning

It all began with a map, a golden retriever named Mila, and a leap of faith. My journey to Mexico had started in Monterrey, but an early departure from a house-sitting arrangement left me searching for my next stop. That night, I closed my eyes, placed a finger on a map, and opened them to see Cancún.
As I prepared for the move, someone in a Facebook group for digital nomads suggested, “Cancún is nice, but you might find Playa del Carmen more your vibe.” I had never heard of Playa del Carmen, but his words stayed with me. So, I took the advice and booked a short stay in Cancún, intending to explore Playa after. It turned out to be one of the most life-changing decisions of my life.
A Surge of Energy

The first day Mila and I arrived in Playa del Carmen, the taxi pulled up to our rental, and I stepped out onto the pavement. In that moment, something incredible happened—a surge of energy traveled through me, as if the very earth beneath my feet was welcoming me. Without thinking, I spoke the word aloud: Home. It wasn’t a conscious realization, but an undeniable knowing that I was meant to be here.
This was more than a passing feeling, it was the beginning of a relationship with this land, its history, and its spirit. Over time, I came to understand this connection as both personal and universal, woven into the fabric of the Riviera Maya itself.
The Land that Speaks

The Riviera Maya is a place of contrasts and harmony, where lush rainforests meet the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Its beauty is undeniable, but its energy is what captures the soul. Walking through its vibrant landscapes, you feel the weight of centuries. The towering Ceiba trees, sacred to the Maya as a bridge between worlds, seem to whisper stories of ancestors. The cenotes, natural sinkholes that dot the region, hold crystal-clear water that reflects not just light but the mysteries of the underworld.
Each element of this land feels alive with purpose, from the fluttering wings of the toucan in the rainforest canopy to the rhythmic lull of waves against the shore. Every sound, every scent, and every texture serves as a reminder that life here is interconnected, a delicate balance sustained by the Lumina of the earth itself.
The Spirit of the Maya

The cultural heritage of the Riviera Maya adds a profound layer to its energy. The Maya civilization, whose influence can still be felt today, saw this land as sacred. They understood the balance between the natural world and the cosmos, creating structures like Chichen Itza and Tulum that aligned perfectly with celestial movements. Their spirituality was rooted in harmony, a deep respect for the earth and its cycles.
For me, learning about the Maya has been a humbling journey. Their profound understanding of the universe resonates with themes in my work—balance, connection, and the power of transformation. It’s as if their wisdom has transcended time, inviting those who walk this land to embrace its lessons.
Past Lives and Present Purpose

Over the years, I’ve often wondered why this place feels so familiar. It’s more than admiration; it’s as though my soul has walked these paths before. Past life or not, the connection is undeniable. It inspires my creative work, particularly my project, Aurelda. The landscapes, history, and spirit of the Riviera Maya are intricately woven into its narrative.
Through Aurelda, I explore themes of ancient wisdom, sacred balance, and the resonance between human and earth. The Ceiba trees, the interplay of light and shadow, and the rich spiritual heritage of the Yucatán Peninsula all play key roles. In many ways, Aurelda is my love letter to this land, capturing its essence and sharing it with others in a way that bridges the ancient and the modern.
A Connection Beyond Words

Trying to explain the connection I feel to the Riviera Maya is like trying to capture the ocean in a jar—it’s vast, fluid, and ever-changing. It’s in the quiet moments under the jungle canopy, the vibrant energy of a market filled with laughter, and the profound stillness of a cenote’s mirrored surface.
This land teaches me daily. It reminds me to honor the past, embrace the present, and trust the unknown. It challenges me to live in balance, to seek harmony in my work, and to never forget that I am part of something greater.
A love that continues to teach
Eight years later, this place still teaches me.
It teaches me balance when I become too restless. It teaches me humility when I confuse inspiration with understanding. It teaches me beauty when I forget that the world can still be generous. It teaches me grief when I see what tourism, extraction, pollution, and speed can do to sacred landscapes. It teaches me devotion when I return to the page and try again.
Aurelda is my love letter to the Riviera Maya because love, at its best, does not consume what it loves. It listens. It learns the name of what it does not own. It returns with offerings instead of claims. That is the spirit I want the work to carry.
Not a perfect answer. Not a flawless act of cultural translation. A living vow to create with more care, more gratitude, and more honesty than I knew how to bring yesterday.
The Riviera Maya gave me the first word: Home. Aurelda became the language I am still learning to speak back.
